Amazing Apps: Kiwaka and Kiwaka Story

Disclosure: I received complimentary products to facilitate this post. All opinions are my own.

My whole family loves astronomy, especially my older daughter and husband. Kiwaka is a story based on an ancient legend that fireflies carry light from the stars. First, there's a colorful interactive storybook, narrated by Diogo Morgado, with a soundtrack by David Ari Leon (who worked on Spider Man and Incredible Hulk). The animation and sounds were very child-pleasing but not childish.

Then, there's the app. The gameplay is simple - the animal needs to float or sink to catch fireflies. As fireflies are caught, more stars in the sky light up, revealing constellations kids can learn more about.

Although playing the game is "simple" in terms of rules, there are extra little features that pop up along the way, which means that my four-year-old could handle the basic game, but I found myself trying to play longer to try the harder sequences. Kiwaka and Kiwaka story are each $2.99 for iPhone/iPad.
