Consumer Critique: Somi - The Lagos Music Salon

Disclosure: I received complimentary products to facilitate this post. All opinions are my own.

I haven't had much chance to listen to African music. Lagos Music Salon is a great blend of African-influenced music, include Afro-pop, jazz, soul, rap, and more. There's also some real-life field recordings incorporated in the album, including a protest and an immigration dialogue. The way the album was created was reflective of the culture too. Instead of major performance venues and clubs that might be found in Europe or the US, she performed salons in small galleries and other nontraditional venues, leading to a much more intimate cultural feel.

The songs reflect cultural influence as well, alluding to Nigerian email scams, low-paid domestic workers, and hardships often faced by African women. With many songs the listener can really visualize the sights and sounds of a traditional Africa colored with modern influences. I gained a lot of insight by listening to this album, and it's got fun, colorful rhythms.
