The Entertainment Software Association’s brand new report has uncovered some great statistics about family gaming, and the prevalence of video games in family homes across the USA. Over half of parents surveyed in the report said that video games are a positive part of their child’s life, with nearly half of parents also admitting that they play video games with their child at least once a week.
The facts show that parents and children playing video games together can have a positive effect on everything from education to personal relationships:
- 88% of parents said they play video games because they’re fun for the whole family.
- Three-quarters of adults see gaming as a great opportunity to socialize with their child.
- 47% admit to enjoying video games just as much as their child!
- Just over 60% of parents use multiplayer games as a way to monitor game content.
Nikolai Veselov, of MyRealGames, one of the US’ leading online gaming sites for adults and children alike, says, “It is fantastic news that the families of America are using computer games as a way to socialize and spend time together. Games like the free download games we provide at MyRealGames offer a great platform for intergenerational play and learning, and they often create a unique dynamic, with the children teaching the parents how to master a certain game. When parents and children spend time together like this, there are great developmental advantages involved – and both parties have a lot of fun!”
Many families with children under the age of 18 are finally coming around to the benefits of computer and video games:
- 68% of families believe game play provides mental stimulation and education for their children.
- 58% believe game play helps their children to connect with friends and improve their interpersonal skills from a young age.
