Did
you know that according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), since 1990 more than 200 infants and young children have died
from strangling in window cords? The CPSC lists corded window
coverings as one of the top five hidden dangers in American homes.
The Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) is urging parents and caregivers to check all window coverings for exposed or
dangling cords that could pose a strangulation hazard to infants and young children.
The WCSC has partnered with interior design expert and OWN’s TV personality
Kim Myles,
to help raise awareness
around cord safety in the homes with young children, and find
affordable ways to incorporate style while creating a safe environment.
Below are a few of Kim’s DIY, modern, chic and safe design tips:
·
What’s the easiest way to update your space?
Switching up your window panels each season! Go lightweight in the
summer (think cotton), and heavier in the winter (I love a velvet
drape!). Florals and/or patterned coverings in
between seasons help you keep it feeling fresh!”
·
“Paint the trim around your window a bold color to
create a unique look, then hang a simple and safe cordless blind – it’s a
modern and playful take on window design.
·
Roller shades are crisp and modern, plus sky’s the
limit on styles, colors and patterns. They’re also completely cord-free
and safe for kids, so you can play with different looks to create a
unique and safe design in any room.
·
Window treatments have so much power! They let you
control the light, and thus the mood of a room. Safe, cord-free window
treatments give you a range of light filtering options to choose from,
and they’re safe for babies and children.
