Book Nook: Case Two - Big Bully Holly Howler

According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, about a quarter of students are bullied during the school year. Adults can likely point to bullying that goes on among adults as well. Dr. Elan
a Ashley has mentored students, teachers, and parents through multiple workshops on child abuse, drug education, character development, self-esteem, and conflict management.

This work inspired who to write  “Case Two: Big Bully Holly Howler” (available in both English and English/Spanish). In Ashley’s book, which I recently got to review, she focuses on getting help handling bullies and a simple way to try changing the behavior of a bully.

In the book, Ellie Elephant turns to her friend Splunkey for advice on how to handle Holly Howler, a mean student at school. Splunkey's advice and her own reaction helps change the atmosphere and make a new friend.

The book also has a unique illustration style, using puppets and photography. It's a cute style not seen in many books! Although not all bullying can be solved as simply as it is in the book, sometimes being a friend is the best way to defuse a bullying situation.
