Every year people hit the stores to buy ice melters. Many think nothing of it and buy the cheapest stuff they can, and many more every year are choosing to buy a more expensive product that gives the sense of safety to their home, property, family and pets. The problem is that ice melters are one of the least understood or known about markets. It takes a chemist to understand what they are selling. With names like Calcium Chloride, Sodium Chloride, Magnesium Acetate, Potassium Acetate, Calcium Magnesium Acetate, Carbonyl Diamide, etc..., people have no clue what they are looking at. However, almost every one of them is a salt or chloride based product or a derivative of them. They are harmful and even toxic to pets, can damage concrete, and ruin property, and affect the environment. Salts and chlorides do not disappear, instead they go into the ground and stay there, or get washed away and settle somewhere else…Forever! The rising salt volumes around the country that have contaminated water is at alert status with ecologists freaking out!!

If the warning label says keep out of reach of children, harmful if swallowed, may cause irritation, etc... then the customer should be wary! This can be a very well working product that can manage a wide range of temperatures and sustain a longer period. The problem is that the companies are still using a little of the worst stuff, so that means a smaller part of your driveway will be ruined or sidewalk, and your dog probably won't die from ingesting it, but may still get very sick, could be organ damage. This customer cares, but just hasn't taken the time to educate themselves on the differences of each product. There are tons of these types of products.
3. The knowledgeable buyer - This buyer cares enough to research products. They have read the warning label on the back of the products they were using and wondered if there was anything that was more effective and safer.
