Two years ago there was a lice outbreak and my daughters' school, and quite a few families used the resources of a local lice removal specialist, as well as the information provided by her. For example,
- transmission of lice by inanimate objects is actually quite rare (one study found 0 lice on the hats of 1000 infected children)
- lice is not a sign of poor hygiene
- head-to-head contact is actually the most common way of getting lice (such as kids with loose hair working on a project in close proximity)
- permethrin-based products often don't eradicate lice (one study found only 53% of lice and 69% of nits killed)
I recently had a chance to try out some lice prevention and treatment products from FairyTales Hair Care. Now, with there being no current lice issue, I can't attest to their effectiveness. However, I can tell you that the products are free of toxins, pesticides, sulfates, parabens, dairy, gluten, and nuts. The formulas are biodegradable. The Rosemary Repel® Shampoo, Conditioner, and Conditioning Spray havea combination of rosemary, citronella, tea tree, and geranium oils to repel lice, along with jojoba and chamomile to moisturize hair and soothe the scalp. It left my daughters' hair feeling clean and smelling good without a really strong scent.
The company also makes products for hair exposed to chlorine, bed bug repellents, and more! You can find FairyTales Hair Care at select salons and a variety of stores, or purchase online (free shipping for orders over $29.95).
