Book Nook: How-To Books for Mother's Day

I was recently sent a really fun package of books that would make good gifts for a variety of women (or men, if they're so inclined). Here are the parenting and how-to books I was sent.

Cooking, Baking, and Making: 100 Recipes and DIY Ideas for All Seasons and Reasons - Honestly, what sets this cookbook apart is that it doesn't have a focus. I can resonate with the idea of a cookbook that has a bit of everything - after all, that's what this blog has, and what I experience in my hodgepodge of part-time jobs. This was actually a really good book for me - instead of having a ton of recipes on the same theme, there were ideas for pretty much everything. It would be an excellent first cookbook for someone who doesn't know where to start. And yet, it would also be a good cookbook for the cook who needs some fresh ideas for entertaining, because many of the recipes were unique ones I hadn't seen before, and the DIY entertaining ideas were easy to do for people of all craft levels.

A Beginner's Guide to Essential Oils: Recipes and Practices for a Natural Lifestyle and Holistic Health - I've seen other guides to essential oils before, and each one has its own spin. Author Hayley Hobson left a career as a lawyer to teach Pilates and yoga and sell essential oils. She believes strongly in a holistic approach to wellness, and this book includes not only the basics needed (uses of essential oils, safety in handling, ways to implement them on a daily basis) but also her own successful tricks (blends for specific uses and a 31-day plan).

Deep Breaths: The New Mom’s Handbook to Your Baby's First Year - This is one of the first baby-rearing guides I've seen that is blatant in its target audience of millennial moms. The book specifically points out traits of the mom it targets, and uses that to use the typical traits of millennials as strengths in parenting. I really like the idea of using those strengths instead of living up to someone else's standards. The author also encourages readers to enjoy parenting - both the ups and downs - and offers advice for working moms and moms who want to keep their social life.

Geek Sweets: An Adventurer's Guide to the World of Baking Wizardry - The whole book is written with a geeky theme, though, using riffs from role-playing games to describe tasks and steps throughout the book. The pictures are colorful and appetizing, and geek elements include Harry Potter, Minecraft, Doctor Who, D&D, and much more. There are even tips for hosting parties, like TV viewings and game nights. For the creative geek who wants to bring a little extra something special to the party, this is a great book.
