I have previously reviewed Eggnots, allergy-friendly ceramic eggs that make egg dying permanent and safe for those who can't be around eggs. I was recently sent a set, along with some ornament hangers, to highlight the fact that they aren't just for Easter.
I wouldn't have thought about making Christmas ornaments out of the Easter eggs, which is really funny because we have several egg-shaped Christmas ornaments on our tree already. When my daughter saw the kit she instantly had great ideas for them, and is planning to use them for gifts for family and friends.
The trickiest thing about decorating them is the rounded surface. They have a recipe for dying the eggs using food coloring, but my daughter also enjoyed using nail polish and permanent markers. Because they are slightly porous, it's tricky to have crisp, fine lines, but she was still able to create very detailed work on the eggs.
Eggnots can make a great craft for any time of year. Even though they're ceramic, they aren't especially fragile (a drop from a high surface could cause them to chip, but rolling off a low table won't). You can buy them online - at just over $1 per egg, they're a pretty economical handmade gift.
