In this humorous and boldly colorful read, children follow a boy who frightens the creatures in the closet with the help of his baby sister. Tana has created a universally meaningful message that disarms the figures that intimidate us. Monsters Are Afraid of Babies brings new perspective on the unknown, by humanizing those scary invisible creatures.
On a mission to inspire children and adults, Tana is debuting three new fiction titles that will enchant young audiences this fall. The upcoming Monsters Are Afraid of Babies, The Kingdom of Glee, and The Kitten, The Cat & The Apple will encourage literacy and evoke imagination in readers.
Lovers of Where the Wild Things Are, Goosebumps and Pixar’s Monster’s Inc., will tingle with terror reading this spooky story with a relevant sentiment on fear and anxiety. Monsters readers will delight in each page turn, filled with eye-catching artwork and playful rhyme.

All your books seem to deal with love and family, is there a particular message you hope to convey?
If there’s an overarching message in my children’s stories, it’s that love has the power to make everything right. Children, much like adults, are filled with so much love and fear; hence the world can feel chaotic at times. My books show people, animals - even monsters - tackling problems as a team or family unit, highlighting the importance of strong relationships and working together. I hope to demonstrate in every story how love can help us overcome feeling bored, lonely or afraid. This makes life better for everyone.

What inspired the idea for your very unique story: Monster’s Are Afraid of Babies?
The idea for Monsters Are Afraid of Babies came to me when I was babysitting my four-year-old nephew, Paolo, and his one-year-old sister, Lucia. Scared to sleep alone, Paolo insisted that Lucia sleep with him. This perplexed me, so I asked him why. He stared back at me confused, as if the answer were obvious. “‘Everybody knows monsters are afraid of babies,” he said. The book is dedicated to Paolo and his sister.
On the surface, Monsters Are Afraid of Babies is a story about using one’s baby sister to ward off monsters. However, on a deeper level, it’s about facing xenophobia through understanding; recognizing that fear of change and a trepidation for "the other" is universal. This is the first step toward empathy, which can help overcome scary emotions. A child therapist friend, who read the story, said that she believed the story could help kids come to terms with the natural fears they might feel about having a new addition to their family, too.
Award-winning writer Nicholas Tana has been hired as a consultant for Disney, Twentieth Century Fox and NFL in addition to managing his own production and consulting company, Smart Media. Tana shares his expertise as a public speaker by participating on entertainment panels at notable conferences and film festivals like Comic-Con, HollyShorts Film Festival, ScareLA, and Sedona International Film Festival. Tana has most recently been hired by Disney Publishing to write a story about Snow White, as part of its 5 Minute Easter Stories, which will appear in 2020.
