Justin Bieber has been accused of sexual assault from 2014. Actor Danny Masterson, best known for his role on "That '70s Show," was charged with three counts of rape dating back to 2001 to 2013. Actor Chris D’Elia from the show, Whitney was accused of predatory behavior dating back several years ago. Why is it that so many sexual assault cases regarding high profile celebrities take so long to come to light? Do the passing years make it harder to investigate and prosecute such a case? Beyond celebrities how many cases go unreported each year? What can be done?
I had a chance to interview Keisha Lonon, a victims rights advocate, a former investigator with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and author of the critically acclaimed book, Being A Victim Just By Being Me.
Why are we now hearing more about sexual assault cases from years ago?
I personally believe there are more reports because previously majority of sexual assault complaints were not reported. Awareness has promoted the conversation to discuss openly sexual assault. For instance, like the Me Too Movement helped empower many to talk about their experience and fight for self. We are currently in a powerful movement.
What are some disadvantages of waiting so long to report?
Rape Kits are time sensitive, after 120 days it’s very difficult to collect evidence off of the victim’s body and/or garments. In addition, it is hard to discover probable cause for arrest without plausible evidence. The story may change after the traumatic incident (which is normal due to the impact of trauma). Then the plausible evidence is usually hard to present years later because the victim forgot major details.
For example: Victims who reported to have physically and verbally harm, resisted previously. The victim Will have to produce substantial evidence of the incident. It’s hard to present the credibility of the victim because of the length of time of the incident.
How prevalent is the issue of unreported sexual assaults?
I believe sexual assault is the most unreported violent crime. According to RAINN 3 out of 4 go unreported. I agree with the Stats because I have help a large sum of victims whom requested ….” Please do not report his or her case.”
How can victims of sexual assault advocate for themselves and find support?
After experiencing a sexual assault, a survivor may experience physical, emotional, and psychological effects. These are common reactions:
- Feeling guilt/ self-blame- It is never your fault, admit you was violated.
- Flashback-grounding exercises may help (saying out loud what you currently see, hear and/or taste.)
- Avoidance and Panic attacks- its normal to lose interest in things and it’s hard to control your thoughts
These are signs you need to seek additional help. There are many organizations in every state to help with resources. The hospital, crime victim compensation, non-profit organizations & more are available. Each day is a new day and find someone to walk this journey with you.
