Fun Freetime: Candy Activities from Thames.& Kosmos

Candy seems to be a big part of Halloween - and Thames & Kosmos has a couple of activities to make candy educational! I had a chance to review these activities with my kids (and their friends), and we enjoyed them.

Groovy Glowing Candy Lab from Thames & Kosmos

This lab lets kids make gummy candies that actually glow. It includes what you need to make gummies, hard candy, and ice cubes, each of which glow. I was a little worried about what that meant, especially since I'm not a huge fan of artificial additives, but I learned that riboflavin (vitamin B2) will glow under black light (included). There was some educational content as well, including chemistry of pigments and physics of light. Everything was included. The lab is designed for ages six and up, some of the info my kids already knew, but they still enjoyed the time and learned a little bit along the way! They loved making the candy (and eating them).

Candy Claw Machine from Thames & Kosmos

I've never liked those claw machines - I've never been able to get exactly what I wanted. But when you own one, even a small one, it can be a fun activity. This worked with fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination in a non-screen way, and it also made the kids work on engineering and following instructions - helpful skills for problem-solving! It comes with a few candies and fake boxes, and you can add whatever small candies you want - it was a fun activity that got everyone working together! Unfortunately, there were a few glitches along the way - making the hydraulics work was a challenge and my daughter didn't thread the ribbon right. But even though our claw wasn't as smooth in operation as it should have been, it was a great learning experience with a sweet reward.
