Book Nook: Creative Therapy for Children with Autism, ADD, and Aspergers

Thirty years ago, when Janet Tubbs (author of Creative Therapy for Children with Autism,  ADD, and Aspergers) began working with children who had low self-esteem and behavioral  problems, she developed a successful program using art, music, and movement. She then became  the founder of Children’s Resource Center in Scottsdale, Arizona, and went on to apply her  innovative methods and strategies to children with autism, ADD/ADHD, and Asperger’s  Syndrome.

I had a chance to review her new book. In the book, Janet describes examples of children who have been reached by creative activities, and includes specific goal-minded activities to work with children who are on the autism spectrum.

There were definitely some things about the book that I really liked. I strongly believe that creative activities such as art, drama, and music can help kids learn real-life skills. I had been doing some of these activities with my kids to help them even before either one was diagnosed (one with ADHD and one with ASD). They are definitely things that have worked in our family - and still work.

There were also some things that I wasn't completely sure about, or didn't agree with - but not so much that I didn't get anything out of the book. If you're looking for different ways to reach your kids, this book can provide you with some extra tools for your toolbox!
