Enriching Education - Lone Star Flight Museum Summer Programming

From summer camps to special programs for toddlers and life-long learners, the Lone Star Flight Museum has a variety of summer programs that spotlight the wonder of flight for any visitor!

 

Summer Day Camps

The Lone Star Flight Museum is offering a wide variety of day camps, Monday through Friday, for children ages 6 to 15. Campers will learn about all things aviation while getting hands-on experience in the world of flight. From testing their piloting skills in a simulator to learning about the planes and people that made history, Lone Star Flight Museum offers something for every camper. Camps are available now through August 2 and are $285 per camp and $250 for members. Not a member? Join today! Camps run 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. CT. Before and after camp care is available for an additional fee and pre-ordered lunches are available in the museum’s Minuti Coffee Shop.

Camp Session Options:

Cross the thin line from air to space. See how astronauts lived in the shuttle cabin as you explore NASA’s crew cabin trainer, inspect the flight simulator that trained all the shuttle pilots, and learn how to fly from outer space to an earthly runway.

Become a hot air balloon, glider and rockets builder! Every day will be a building challenge as you create working model aircraft to take home. Explore things that look like they shouldn’t fly but do and invent your own flying contraption.

Follow flight school training as you trace the path to becoming a pilot. Practice simulator flying using your new navigating and piloting skills as you progress through a new flight plan. Once you complete Basic Training, you’re on to Pilot Maker: Advanced Training.

Investigate the mysteries surrounding historic missing planes like Amelia Earhart’s Lockheed 10E Electra. Learn about the National Transportation Safety Board and their role in finding answers.

Track lost planes using instruments, weather and other clues to solve the mystery of lost aircraft!

This challenge will test your skills and nerves! Can you make it through the Grand Canyon, as a bush pilot in the tundra, through remote mountains, or land on an aircraft carrier? Learn about all the conditions in each area as you race around the world.

Take a close look at the planes and people that made history. Each day, examine a different set of warbirds – observers, trainers, fighters, and bombers and see how pilots and crew relied on these aircraft to get the job done. Then hop in our flight simulators to fly missions.

Battle different hair-raising conditions in multiple types of planes. Then get ready for flight and learn about different career paths for pilots so you’ll be ready to soar!

  • New Future Aviators Wanted: Ages 13 to 15, held July 8 to 12

You’re Hired! Spend five days deep diving into the many careers in aviation and see what it takes to be an awesome STEM or aviation professional. Special guests who work in the industry will tell you all about what they do and you’ll get to ask questions about how totally cool their job really is!

From Wright Brothers to Outer Space, these little learners will become junior aviators in training as they learn about planes, weather, space, and more! Fun history, STEM and aviation lessons are mixed in with loads of and arts & crafts! 

  • Pilot Maker: Advanced Training: Ages 13 to 15, held July 22 to 26

After completing Pilot Maker: Basic Training, continue your training toward more real-world situations. Test your skills in flying and landing with a 30-mph crosswind, at night, with a 1000 ft cloud ceiling! Then dust off your knowledge of maintaining altitude, controlled turns, and instrument flight in unpredictable weather conditions and mechanical failures. Once you complete this training, you will be ready for flight!

Campers will learn about the science of weather and aviation. Fly into info about rain cycle, different weather conditions, and what pilots need to know for a safe flight. Skills are put to the test when campers experience these weather conditions in our Flight Simulators!

 

NEW!!! Maker! – Hands-on STEM programs for all ages!

Do you wonder how things like propellers, engines, and rockets work? These hands-on 45-minute workshops engage curiosity and bring out the tinkerer in all of us! Maker! session dates include:

Workshops begin at 1:30 p.m. CT. Museum admission must be purchased to attend workshops. $12 for non-members; $10 for members.

Tiny: Aviation Play for Toddlers Special Programs

Bring mommy or daddy for an hour of developmental playtime in the Boeing Toddler Terminal l to spark curiosity about aviation in the littlest learners! Programs begin at 9:00 a.m. and the Museum opens at 10:00 a.m. Museum admission is included with program fee. Attendees will receive a “My Tiny Passport” to collect stickers from each Tiny program in the series and be entered into a drawing for a free t-shirt! Click on each subject for more detail!

  • $12 for non-members
  • $10 for members
  • $10 for each additional parent/guardian and other guests over age 4

 

Youth Overnights

Youth Overnights are for youth groups of any kind including scouts, church groups, JROTC, clubs, family organizations, or a group of friends that want to have a great time!

 

Learn more about our aircraft, conduct a preflight inspection, test pilot skills in our flight simulators, and have fun with hands-on STEM activities. Set up camp and sleep under the wings of our rare and historic planes! Pizza, snacks, and a light breakfast are included. Dates include:
