There are hundreds of Greek islands but what makes Ikaria so unique? Residents here have much lower rates of diseases, high levels of mental health and remain physically active into their latest years here in this “Blue Zone”, a name given to 5 regions in the world where people often surpass general life expectancies. People here tend to have zero stress and live to ridiculously long ages well into their 90’s and 100’s. Why? Well, there are many theories. One factor is their Mediterranean diet – a great deal of olive oil which is rich in antioxidants , a hefty amount of vegetables that are rich in hydration, vitamins and minerals that boost the immune system, and a ton of garlic which protects cardiac and brain cells. Let’s not forget Omega 3 acids found in fresh fish which deters degenerative conditions of the body. And, plenty of nuts and whole grains which boost circulation. So, there’s that. Movement is a huge key here too- many residents here love walking and since it’s hilly here, its always a great workout and the midday rest is a must here. Naps are part of life and improve cardiac health. And then, there is the social aspect. Ikarians maintain intensely close bonds with family and friends which has been proven to expand lifespan. Zero stress, no anxiety and a life bursting with optimism. Here, there are simply no schedules. It’s about “hey I’ll see you soon” but not attaching a time or appointment to it. It’s about “the store may open today or it may not” and if it doesn’t, you’ll just deal with it and guess what? You’ll be fine… Want to take a glimpse at the true core of the good life?
