Who gives the worst gift?
In-laws are the worst offenders, with 17% of survey respondents claiming that their worst holiday gifts were given by their spouse’s parents. A list of other "worst gift" perpetrators:
- Spouse/significant other: 10%
- Aunt/Uncle: 7%
- Boss: 6%
- Best friend: 3%
- Children: 3%
When given a horrible holiday gift, what do Americans typically do with it?
32% of Americans will re-gift. Adults 55 and older are more likely to donate their terrible gifts to charity (31%) vs. 18-34 year olds (16%), but 18-34 year-olds are more likely to sell their unfortunate holiday items on EBay or similar site (20%) versus adults in that age group (9%).
How do Americans feel about those Secret Santa exchanges, anyways? Results were mixed on this. 18% believe they are a waste of money (they’d rather give money to charity) and 17% would rather shovel snow than participate in one because the gifts are so thoughtless. However, more than 50% of respondents have positive feelings toward Secret Santa exchanges (I'm in this group - I think they're fun! Besides, they're usually optional, so just opt-out if you don't like them).
If you're worried they won’t find what they want under the tree, Wyndham Rewards® is spreading holiday joy with its “My Horrible Holiday Gift” contest, which gives consumers the chance to win two million Wyndham Rewards points, or other valuable prizes including $50 and $100 gift cards.
Now through January 10, 2012, U.S. and Canadian consumers who visit www.wyndhamrewards.com/holiday and upload a photo of their horrible holiday gift, along with a brief description, can enter to win the gift they really want – the gift of travel. Two million points equates to more than 300 free nights and with more than 6,500 participating hotels to choose from — including those under well-known brands like Wyndham Hotels and Resorts®, Ramada®, Days Inn®, Super 8® and more — members are sure to find accommodations regardless of where their travels may take them.
