Consumer Critique: Attached at the Heart

Disclosure: I received complimentary products to facilitate this post. All opinions are my own.

Attachment parenting. Some people swear by it, others make fun of it, and many parents are somewhere in the middle. Attached at the Heart: Eight Proven Parenting Principles for Raising Connected and Compassionate Children is a comprehensive guide to attachment parenting from before conception through age five. There's a lot of research about attachment parenting that suggests that children raised this way have a strong sense of respect, affection, and empathy - traits that many parents desire for their kids.

The book is divided into the introduction, the eight principles (preparation, feeding, responding, nurturing touch, safe sleep, consistent and loving care, positive discipline, balance) and a conclusion. Even if you aren't fully a fan of attachment parenting, there are a lot of useful nuggets in this book. We have followed a lot of attachment parenting principles (without really intentionally subscribing to attachment parenting) and found that they are very effective and fit our family well. Positive discipline feels so much better than other options. Nurturing touch worked miracles on our first when she was younger, and is wonderful for our second now. I didn't necessarily agree with or do everything this author brings up, but I like how the background for the principles is fully explained, practical, and informative. Things are fully researched - discipline and religion around the world, cosleeping, oxytocin, and more. There are also some great appendices regarding myths vs. facts of attachment parenting, UNICEF tips for breastfeeding, and additional resources for more information. Even though my kids are pretty much past the age needed for this book, I can still recommend it for anyone with a new baby or getting ready to get pregnant.
