Consumer Critique: Diabetes and Me

Disclosure: I received complimentary products to facilitate this post. All opinions are my own.

I don't have kids with diabetes, but I have friends with children with diabetes. It's a scary, long-term health topic that kids need to learn to take responsibility for, often at an early age. Diabetes and Me: An Essential Guide for Kids and Parents is a kid-friendly way to explain diabetes and is published just in time for American Diabetes Month. It covers topics many kids may not be aware of, such as all of the people involved in the diabetes team. It also includes basics like taking care of blood sugar, ways to explain things to other people, and possible consequences of not taking care of yourself.

The comic-book style illustrations guide the reader through four different people to look at different types of diabetes and different situations. The author was herself diagnosed with diabetes as a teen, and is currently a science teacher, so she has a knack for explaining tough scientific topics at a relatable level.

If I had a kid with diabetes, I would strongly encourage them to read this book to make it less of a mystery and help them have ownership over their condition.
