Book Nook: How Autism is Reshaping Special Education - The Unbundling of IDEA

July is Purposeful Parenting Month, and one way we can be purposeful as parents is to get appropriately involved in our children's education. As a teacher, I was intrigued to review How Autism is Reshaping Special Education: The Unbundling of IDEA.

While the book specifically mentions autism, the idea of "unbundling" special education can affect all students with learning disabilities. Parents of children in special education likely already know about IEPs and appropriate accommodations, but for those who are new to navigating the system, it can be hard to know exactly how to advocate for what our children need.

The book looks at several factors affecting the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA): the number of students with autism, the way society's views of learning disabilities have changed, and the political implications. It's a book that would be appropriate for anyone who wants to learn more about the way IDEA shapes special education, whether that's a parent or a teacher.
