There are some “Little Books” that pack a big punch available from Walter Foster Publishing! I had a chance to review books in this new series, which teach artists a variety of interesting topics.
The books are a great size. They're small, so they aren't intimidating to beginning artists. They're concise, so they pack a lot of information in one book. They have practice pages, as well as exercises and prompts, to help engage creativity and inspire learning a new skill or honing one that's already been learned. The books I got to read teach Manga Drawing, Lettering & Word Design, and Sketching.
My daughter was intrigued by the manga - she doesn't have a lot of experience with this art form. She's done a little bit, but this gave her a lot more ideas and examples, so when she's trying to draw manga or anime it actually looks like it's supposed to.
The lettering & word design was a lot of fun for her as well, because she likes to write letters and notes. This gave her some creative ways to jazz up what she writes with fancy letters and stylish alphabets.
The sketching one was really easy for her. She's been sketching for a long time, and loves to sketch a lot of different things, so with the 100+ prompts and ideas on a variety of themes, it was entertaining and interesting to work through.
