As a kid, I didn't appreciate history. As an adult, I find it fascinating to learn how different events related to each other, or how similar events came about in different countries. I was very intrigued by the book Mrs Pankhurst's Purple Feather: Fashion, Fury and Feminism - Women's Fight for Change.
First of all, it details events in Great Britain, which is naturally a country I don't know as well as the US, especially when it comes to women's suffrage and related issues. I had no idea that, for example, the fight for conservation would be at odds with women's suffrage, due to the feathered hats many women suffragists wore.
Emmeline Pankhurst was a notable suffragette; Etta Lemon was against "murderous millinery." Both have legacies that live on - women are allowed to vote, and Britain's biggest conservation charity (RSPB) is still in force with over a million members.
This book does a good job of looking at the contributions of both women in a way that is engaging and educational. It was a fun book to read, to learn more about historical feminism in a different country.
