Music Minute: The Story Pirates - Backstroke Raptor

The Story Pirates explore the world searching for an unusual kind of treasure: kids’ stories. They turn the wildest and most imaginative tales into exciting sketch comedy, books, a top-rated podcast and songs to entertain millions of families worldwide.

The Story Pirates recently released their second album, Backstroke Raptor, with Gimlet Media. The album of original songs follows the award-winning 2018 release Nothing Is Impossible.

All songs originally aired on the first and second seasons of The Story Pirates Podcast, which is a #1 top rated podcast for kids (Apple Podcast ranking) and has had more than 10 million downloads.

The title track is a B-52s-style surf rock dance tune about “the coolest raptor in the raptor pack,” who somehow repairs a boat and escapes from an island by swimming away on his back. Author Ben from Virginia will be chatting with SiriusXM Radio about how he created the original story idea.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is a featured guest on The Wizard Who Could Just Go Poof,” a rap set to the melody of “Pachelbel’s Canon.” The song tells the tale of uncool Erlin, a young wizard whose powers seem ineffective until he brings down a haughty dragon (Miranda) with a “poof” of his wand. Miranda is a longtime fan of the Story Pirates and listens to the podcast with his children.

Catch the Story Pirates and young "Backstroke Raptor" author Benlive on SiriusXM on Friday morning with Absolutely Mindy, and see them perform this summer at several shows in Las Vegas, New York City and Los Angeles. They’ll also appear at Wilco’s Solid Sound festival in Massachusetts June 28 to 30. Recent episodes of the Story Pirates Podcast featured John Oliver, Colin Meloy (The Decemberists), Timothy Simons (Veep) and Claire Danes. Meanwhile, The Story Pirates Changemakers continue to bring creative literacy programs to dozens of schools each year.
