Healthy Habits: Travel and Sleep

Jonathan Kunke is co-founder of Honeydew Sleep Company and co-creator of an all-new kind of support pillow.

“Traveling for the holidays is a fun way to spend this special time with friends and family far away,” says Jonathan, “but sleeping on surfaces your back and neck aren’t used to can cause undue pain, aggravation, stress, and sleeplessness. You can’t bring your mattress with you, but you can bring a great pillow. Bring back great memories – not a sore neck and sleep deprivation. For the most part when traveling,” Jonathan says, “you have no control over what kind of bed you end up in. Even nice hotels can have terrible beds and pillows. By bringing your own pillow, you have some control over your sleep experience.”

I had a chance to interview Jonathan to get more travel sleep tips.

What sets the Honeydew Sleep Travel Pillow apart from other travel pillows?
The thing that makes The Scrumptious Travel Pillow really special, is that it is much more like a full size pillow than a travel pillow. Although it rolls up into a package that is easy to take with you, when you unroll it you have the experience of using a full size pillow instead of one of the horse-shoe type pillows that can really only be used on an airplane. This is the key! The Scrumptious Travel Pillow is a pillow you would be comfortable using every day, in a package that makes it easy to take with you. We love to travel, and so before we started making our own pillows, we had tried all of the different travel pillows on the market, but every other pillow designed for travel had some serious compromises. When traveling, most of your time is spent in various hotels, and that is where you really benefit from having your own pillow. Plus, like all of our pillows, the amount of fill inside it can be adjusted to be perfect for your body, so you have a pillow with you that is custom tailored to give you the support that you need.

Why is it important for people to own a travel pillow? It is really important to bring a travel pillow with you, because even if the mattress in your hotel supports you properly, lack of neck support can completely ruin your trip. Frequently, hotel mattresses are really uncomfortable, and even a hotel that has a decent mattress may have something that is too hard or too soft for your back. When you bring your own pillow, you are at least ensuring that you will have proper support for your neck and shoulders, and that makes a huge difference. As somebody who suffers from allergies, my biggest issue when traveling was always breathing, and being able to bring a pillow that I know will keep my neck aligned and my airways open is a total game changer. I don’t use a flat, pancake-like pillow at home, and when a hotel has a down pillow not only does it kick my allergies into overdrive, but it never provides enough support to have me waking up feeling rested. With a travel pillow, none of that is a concern anymore, and as an added bonus – I have a pillow that can help me get some much needed rest on the long flight or train ride!

Besides a good pillow, what are your favorite tips for sleep while traveling?I always bring earplugs and a sleep mask with me when traveling, and I recommend that everybody does! I never use the sleep mask at home, but I also have a bedroom where I have complete control over the amount of natural light. When traveling, all of that goes out the window, and sometimes, a bright courtyard light right outside of your window can keep you up all night. Not to mention, there is no way to know how loud the environment is going to be until you actually get there. Plus, using earplugs creates a sort of white noise inside your head that is really soothing. They are the only way I am able to get some sleep on a plane or a train, and they are incredibly useful when your room is right up against a noisy street. Especially if you are traveling somewhere with a significant time difference, getting the amount of sleep you need at odd times is absolutely necessary. Having these essentials in your bag can be the deciding factor between having a 1-day jet lag and a 5-day jet lag.
