I recently had a chance to review Aline and the Blue Bottle by debut author Carolina Ugaz-Morán. This book is the start of an enchanting series, Adventures of Aline. The series, geared for middle-grade readers, has a unique and well-developed universe, and draws inspiration and vocabulary from ancient Incan mythology and languages.
One day, 12-year-old Aline discovers that a multitude of secrets surround her. Her family is not her family, and her home is not her home—nothing is what it previously seemed. Her journey includes strong female characters, elements of traditional fantasy, magical secrets, and language.
“I am half Peruvian and have included Quechua in the book—an almost forgotten language,” says Ugaz-Morán, “I want to bring the attention it deserves, as well as awareness of the language and its history to young readers while taking them on an amazing adventure!”
This was a great book for me to read - I love fantasy fiction, and this is exactly the kind of book my daughter enjoys too. Middle-grade readers, especially girls, will love following Aline on her adventures.
