How many times have you been at a get-together, family activity, concert, or other event and realized you were only half there? Your mind wanders to work emails, social media, game notifications, and more.
If you've been there, then author Joe McCormack has written a book for you. I had a chance to review NOISE: Living and Leading When Nobody Can Focus. "What the heck are we thinking?" says the author. "Nothing on that phone—however outrageous or dire or seemingly urgent—can top the drama and dysfunction that's happening all around us at the average holiday gathering!"
McCormack considers the information overload "noise." It affects our attention span, and our ability to focus, listen, and work. It also affects how we can appreciate the time that happens with family.
The book is well-written - there is a little bit of an element of guilt, but more than that, it's about reclaiming our attention span and paying attention to how we manage what could distract us. It's focused primarily on managers and leaders, but we all have the ability to be a leader somewhere, even if it's just in our own home.
