Enjoy this interview:

Why did you write this book?
When my daughters were young, they enjoyed princess stories from books and movies. They also enjoyed the silly stories I would make up and tell them. I decided that I would like to write my own princess story in a more traditional style rather than a silly style so that other children could enjoy it as well as my daughters. I chose to make it a Christmas story because Christmas is a fun and hopeful time of the year. It seemed like a great time to place a love story in. I want this book to become a Christmas story that children can treasure every year like other Christmas stories such as “The Polar Express” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” Additionally, I want this book to subtly keep Christ in Christmas, so I have the characters go to Church on Christmas Day and sing traditional Christmas Carols.

What do you like most about writing children’s books?
Children have a sense of wonder that makes them open to storytelling. You can add features to a children’s book such as magic or fairytales. Children just accept this without overthinking it the way an adult would and children like happy endings so the story can be uplifting and inspiring. I truly believe that life is a wonderful gift we have been given by God. I believe this can be portrayed subtly in a children’s book without sounding like you are preaching. Yet you can still get the point across.

What surprised you most about becoming a writer?
What surprised me the most is how I, as an author, could get so completely “lost” into my story that I could actually feel what my characters are feeling. Each character in the story has their own personality and their own desire for how the story should unfold. I had to get into the head and the heart of each character to make the story work. Otherwise the story would not be believable. Prince Kevin in my story is really struggling between pleasing his mother and following his heart. Taryn is struggling between her feelings for Kevin and her fear that her lack of position in high society might not allow him to return her affections. Even Queen Victoria struggles between her desire to uphold the tradition of royalty and her desire for her son to be happy. I had to put myself in each character’s position to see how these struggles would play out to make the ending seem reasonable rather than contrived.
