Healthy Habits: Hormone-Free Birth Control Innovation

There are 21 million women at risk for pregnancy who are not currently using hormonal contraception. There are a variety of reasons why millions of women would prefer to use a hormone-free contraceptive, including personal preference, risk of side effects associated with hormones and/or a negative physical reaction to the hormones.

On the heels of two decades of limited innovation in birth control, women will
soon have access to the first and only FDA-approved, non-hormonal prescription contraceptive gel for use on-demand and ONLY when a woman needs it.

Dr. Charis Chambers (‘The Period Doctor’), a licensed OBGYN and champion for women’s reproductive health rights, discusses the reasons why so many women prefer non-hormonal contraception, and explain the significance of the new birth control gel and how it works to prevent pregnancy.

Chambers elaborate son this first in a new class of birth control, known as a vaginal pH modulator. This method’s mechanism of action prevents pregnancy by maintaining a woman’s natural vaginal pH within the normal range of 3.5 to 4.5 – an acidic environment that is inhospitable to sperm. It’s designed to be used in-the-moment and is quick and easy to use.

Dr. Chambers also highlights the growing importance of telemedicine and how a new telemedicine “concierge” support system can help women obtain seamless and rapid access to a non-hormonal contraceptive gel.
