Book Nook - The Daily Practice of Life: Practical Reflections Toward Meaningful Living

The Daily Practice of Life: Practical Reflections Toward Meaningful Living by Walt Shelton, one of the most read faith columnists in Texas. The book shows that following the routines of Jesus will help us weather any storm.

The book weaves together historical knowledge with Biblical truths and personal experience. It also touches on the universal ideas shown by other faiths and ideas, including Thich Nhat Hanh, Martin Luther King, Jr., Rabbi Harold Kushner, Viktor Frankl, and more. He does this to show that lessons can come from places other than the Bible, and can be valid if they're in line with God's teachings.

There's an emphasis on establishing our priorities and gaining new energy by taking our focus away from the daily rush and stress of life, and back on God, where it belongs. The book has applicaitons for suggestions, and lends itself well to either a personal devotional or group study.

Nicole Villalpando, long-time Faith Editor of the Austin American-Statesman says Shelton "brings Christianity...in a way that feels inclusive of people of all faiths, yet he's very secure in his own religious tradition." To that end, The Daily Practice of Life does not suggest to readers to build walls with gates opening only to creeds matching one's own, but instead helps them:

  • Create a personal routine integrating faith and practical realities

  • Draw on past ups and downs to improve focus on now and offer hope for a brighter future

  • Turn life experiences into parables with wisdom for more informed choices

  • Open up and respectfully listen and learn within and outside our own tradition

  • Amplify commonalities that implement the heart of all authentic religions
