I recently had a chance to read a book that was written by someone who's actually known for something other than writing - for quilting.
Quilting guru Ricky Tims partnered with his musical collaborator Kat Bowser. Together they wrote a magical fantasy story that is the first in a planned series, Lizzy Albright & the Attic Window,
Lizzy's tenth birthday is on Christmas Even in 1964, and they travel to her Granny's mansion where she discovers a quilt. Granny explains all the meanings of each block, and when she falls asleep that night, her imagination and dreams are filled with the stories, bringing the blocks to life.
It's a cute story, weaving together family and fantasy, in a magical kingdom with magical animal creatures. Lizzy is the ruler of the magical kingdom and needs to break its evil curse.
The storytelling that a quilt brings, along with imaginative illustrations, make this adventure intriguing and full of fantasy.
Tims hopes Lizzy's adventures can inspire courage and empowerment for young girls while connecting them to generations past through his love of quilting. Additionally, Tims has created a version of Granny's own quilt--Granny's 1930's sampler--that is available to purchase on the Lizzy Albright site.
For Bowser, the unique story not only seamlessly shows how our family bonds are the most important thing, but how belief in yourself and imagination makes anything possible. "Ultimately, you will be your own hero," she says. "Your imagination is a powerful tool that when used in a healthy way, can be life giving and create worlds!”
