Book Nook: Fall Releases from Dover Craft

I had a chance to see a new release from Dover Crafts, Express Yourself! The book has over a hundred bright pages with dozens of prompts designed for tweens and teens. This is actually just what my younger daughter needed. She's a pretty fierce tomboy, so she doesn't like frilly and pink things. She also is much more attracted to bold, bright pages than dull, plain ones. This journal had just enough color to keep her engaged. The prompts were also very short and easy to answer, which was perfect for her attention span. It also helped her focus on things that were positive, without being excessively cheery - something that is good for her, since she's naturally a pessimist and hates forced cheerfulness.

Dover Crafts has other fall releases as well, listed below.

Bargello Needlepoint: A Pattern Directory for Dramatic Creations

Bargello needlepoint, which originated in sixteenth-century Italy, employs a simple stitch that is repeated over and over again to form a distinctive geometric pattern in vibrant colors. Our mothers and grandmothers whiled away their time with it in the 1960s and 70s, and Bargello is now enjoying a revival among crafters. The technique lends itself to dramatic, wave-like designs in exciting, graduated colorways, and it's often used to create striking pillows, bags, belts, and purses.
This new collection brings Bargello designs up to date with 40 stitch patterns, graded from beginner to advanced. Sisters Laura and Lynsey Angell offer a brief history of the technique as well as tips on tools and materials plus a tutorial of the stitches. A wealth of designs follow, enhanced with full-color photos and easy-to-read charts. In addition to guidance for creating textures and smart finishes at edges and borders, the authors provide suggestions for using fancy and alternative yarns and experimenting with freestyle patterns.

Cut and Assemble The Mayflower: A Full Color Paper Model

She was a medium-size merchant vessel of the seventeenth century, but her cargo was far from ordinary. Aboard the Mayflower were 102 passengers, known today as the Pilgrims, who fled religious persecution in Europe for freedom in the New World. In the summer of 1620, the small wooden vessel embarked upon her historic voyage. Sixty-six days later, the Pilgrims landed and established the first permanent colony in New England.
Now hobbyists can commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims' historic voyage by creating their own authentic full-color model of the reconstructed ship that is visited by thousands each year in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Step-by-step instructions and easy-to-follow diagrams enable hobbyists of all ages to assemble a sturdy 17-inch model of the Mayflower II.
