Parenting Pointers: Children and Eyeglasses

Mark S. Agnew, the founder and CEO of leading online eyewear retailer Eyeglasses.com, is offering guidance to parents looking for the best deals on quality children’s glasses.

“Finding glasses is a fairly straightforward experience for adults, but can pose a challenge for children who may feel insecure about wearing them - especially for the first time,” says Agnew. “Luckily there are many different styles and playful shapes to choose from that will help them feel more confident.”

During the first few years of visual development, children may need some help in improving poor eyesight - whether it’s myopia (near-sightedness), hyperopia (far-sightedness), astigmatism, strabismus (crossed or misaligned eyes) or amblyopia (a ‘lazy eye’).

Most kids’ glasses generally come equipped with polycarbonate lenses that don’t break into harmful slivers, with UV protection and scratch-resistant lens coating for added all-around safety during everyday wear.

Other helpful methods of getting children accustomed to the idea of wearing glasses is by making sure that the frame fit is comfortable and doesn’t feel like an awkward, uncomfortable weight on their face.

“Everyone who has never worn glasses before has a ‘learning curve’ to deal with, which takes a couple of weeks,” adds Agnew. “Silicone nose pads, ear grips and spring hinges help with the comfort level, and letting kids choose their own frames makes them more excited about wearing them.

“It’s also important to keep a positive attitude about wearing glasses, because we can feel negative about the experience - as if there’s a ‘problem’ and you’re saddled with having to put them on your face. Treat the need for glasses as an exciting new adventure and fashion statement that will enhance - not hinder - their lives and they will embrace them as well!”

Eyeglasses.com boasts a colorful array of children’s glasses from Aspex, Body Glove, Champion, Dora the Explorer, Eight to Eighty, GX by Gwen Stefani, Guess, Hello Kitty, IZOD, Jessica McClintock, Life is Good, Lucky Brand, Nike, Modz Kids, Oakley, Dilli Dalli and many more.
