Book Nook: The Secret Squad and the Attack of the Zeptobots

While it’s now published to the world, Gavin Long’s ‘The Secret Squad & The Attack of the Zeptobots’ started life as a simple story for the author’s children, often written on the train during his morning commute.

But with them begging for more chapters, and when lockdown set in, Long knew there was pressure to release what he had crafted to the general public. And here it is!

It’s so much more than a children’s book. Combining a story, real-world science and the ability to crack codes and decipher secret messages. And it’s timely, too, with the book’s Zeptobots getting into people like a virus and controlling them. A reminder of Covid, perhaps?!

Synopsis:

Hadyn and Anneliese discover a secret squad in their very own back garden. An explosion leads them to join forces and save the world from an evil teacher, his accomplice and the Zeptobots.! Action and Adventure for 5-8 year olds.

“Much of the science in the book is real,” explains the author. “For example, the chemicals that cause the explosion are real, as are the items listed that were invented by accident. And, believe it or not, Zepto is a real measure of something very small! I wanted the story’s fantastical side to also meld with many things present in the real world.”

Continuing, “I’ve kept the book short, deliberately, to capture the attention spans of children aged from five to eight. Initial feedback to the volume has been extremely impressive which is great, because there’s plenty more to come!”

Reviews have been glowing. Y. Hong writes, “I thought this book was very nice and I recommend it because it was very exciting, funny and adventurous. As soon as I started reading it I couldn’t put it down. The idea of the story was creative and it took me on a thrilling adventure. I loved most of the characters but my favourite character was Acorn the squirrel because he was very cute. When I first saw the book I was very interested to find out more about what the secret squad was about and how the story ended. At the end the crack-the-code part was extremely fun to do! I thought this was a great book and I enjoyed it a lot.”

Robbie adds, “This is an exciting story which children will want to keep reading to the very end...where there is even a secret code to decipher - which is a great idea as the code could be used to make up their own secret messages. Very good value for money.”
