Earth Has Become Asphyxiated by Man’s Drive for Energy and Technology
In this page-turning post-apocalyptic thriller, the fight for survival is tantamount as characters dodge mutant creatures, armed militant groups and earth-scouring Doomstorms
Set nearly 100 years into the future, the earth has been decimated by pollution and civilization has fallen into ruin. The war between nature and humanity has no winner. Humanity's drive for energy and technology was its downfall. In this polluted world, survivors fight on and endure the world destroyed by their ancestors. From what was left, they will rebuild and struggle to make a better place for their descendants.
Four characters in three intertwining time periods fight for survival on a toxic planet:
2099: Oliver: A lone survivor, raising civilization from the ashes.
2154: London and Rose: Nomads caught between warring factions.
2185: Simon: A space station technician initiating a revolution.
Together they may be the last hope for humanity.
A compelling and action-packed novel where nothing less than humanity is at stake. For those who have read The Gunslinger and Mad Max, Forgive Us presents a similar ride that spans three generations of a destroyed earth.
You can learn more about the author in this interview:
When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer? I was fifteen when I decided to start writing for real, and it was around that time I started my high fantasy world. A year later, I started Forgive Us, but I do not remember what made me decide to make the book.
When you are struggling to write/have writer’s block, what are some ways that help you find your creative muse again? Sometimes inspiration strikes me and I can write, or sometimes music can help me enter the zone. If I am really struggling, either I have to wait for time to break the block, or I have to just start writing. It all depends on what’s going on at the time.
What do you think makes a good story? This is something you can’t really pinpoint. I played a game called Journey (2012) which has no dialogue and no words in the game. It’s just music and pictures, but paints a beautiful story all together. Hollow Knight (2017) is another game I played where there’s no real, linear story, but somehow it makes a beautiful world. What makes a good story is hard to decide, and it all depends on how something clicks.
What inspired your story? For Forgive Us, there were many inspirations I had for the book, both consciously and subconsciously. The movies 9 and Wall-E were pretty big influences, while games like the Fallout series (especially New Vegas) served as material for the foundation of my worldbuilding. A few instances of my life go into my books, such as characters having some of the traits and personality quirks that I have.
Is there a message/theme in your novel that you want readers to grasp? There are a few messages in Forgive Us.
War is horrible is a major point that I try to bring across with my book.
Another is that tyranny should not be endured, but rather broken. Regarding tyranny, I also tried to show what real tyranny is, rather than fighting nothing for no reason.
The biggest message in Forgive Us is to consider the health of the planet. In Forgive Us, there’s a layer of trash below the sands, the ocean is brown and black, and the sky has a pollution haze. For the reader, I say just don’t be disgusting about your trash and recycle. No one appreciates a plastic bottle on the side of the road.
