If you're like me, when you saw the title to this book you started getting the tune from the musical stuck in your head. I recently had a chance to review Jesus Christ Movie Star (also available in hard cover) a new book by the award-winning film historian and podcaster Phil Hall.
The life of Jesus Christ has been turned into film for nearly as long as film has been around - over a hundred years. Over those many years, there have been drastically different interpretations of this life, in multimillion dollar videos or microbudget independent films. Many of these films have had their own controversies, including copyright infringement and anti-Semitism.
In this book, Phil Hall takes readers on a journey of these many varied depictions of Christ's life. It was an intriguing read, which included many films I've never heard of, films I've heard of but haven't seen, and films I have seen. As someone who has been amazed just at the difference between Jesus Christ Superstar and Godspell, it was an educational book to read.
