Book Nook: Barkington - The Queen's Spare Corgi

Everybody knows the Queen loves corgis. But how is life for these adopted members of the Royal Family? In an enchanting new book by James Radford, readers finally get to take a peek.

‘Barkington – The Queen's Spare Corgi’ is nostalgic, yet contemporarily satirical and has enough pomp to keep any royal–watcher happy.

Synopsis:

"Barkington Dogsbury was the Queen's Second (or as some said, spare) Corgi. Even though Barkington was smaller than his big brother Lord Wagley (the Queen's First Corgi) he was just as clever – even if the humans didn't think so."

Life as a royal dog inside Buckingham Palace is never dull, but in this book Barkington goes on his first adventure in the outside world and finds out how ordinary animals (and humans) live. Amongst the VIPs you will meet are: Sir Nigel, the Prime Minister's cat, Nils Olav the King Penguin, the fastest Chihuahua in Mexico, a mightily mischievous Mongolian mongoose – and a true Princess.

A short book in eight chapters, Barkington is suitable for children aged 6 to 600 and is the funniest book you will read this year!

“The premise of the book is simple; the Chief Mongol arrives from Mongolia to meet the Queen – meanwhile her pet, the Chief Mongoose, meets the corgis,” explains the author. “But of course, an unexpected adventure ensues involving the Prime Minister’s pompous cat and the “ordinary” dogs out there in London.”

Continuing, “I wanted to write something witty and light–hearted, which celebrates what makes Britain great whilst also laughing about it. I also want to give credit to Claire Mumford, who provided wonderfully apt illustrations that really bring the narrative to life.”
