Gentreo is an online resource for estate planning, with templates and guidance for creating a wide variety of documents, including wills, trusts, and power of attorney documents. They recently also launched pet planning documents, recognizing the need for planning for furry family members as well.
Honestly, before getting a dog, I didn't really think about it - not until one day when my mom told me they were updating their will, and although their pet wasn't named, they were hoping we'd be willing to take care of her if something happened to them. I can see why there's a need for that - if multiple family members are interested in helping out with pets after a loved one dies, it can help to have a document that delineates who exactly can make that decision.
I had a chance to try out the site, and it is easy to use. Each of the documents has a brief questionnaire to fill out, and then that's it - the document can be downloaded, printed, and shared. It also reminds you to make it legal by getting it signed by witnesses and notarized - the exact requirements vary by state (in MN, for example, you only need witnesses to sign the document, but you can have it notarized as an added step). You can add people to be able to view your documents as well. Compared to the price of a lawyer, it's an excellent value ($99 for one year) and they also have a resource center to provide further information and education.
If you're interested, I have a chance to share a code that will get you 15% off your first year - which means you can get your ducks in a row for estate planning for less than a hundred dollars. Just sign up for Gentreo using that link and then use code GENTREO15MM.
