Fun Freetime: Roller Skating

Roller skating has been around since the late 1700s, but its popularity didn’t take off until the 20th century.

In 1905, the American east coast began to see a few roller skating rinks pop up in larger cities and became a popular form of entertainment over dancing or other social, physical activities. It only took a few years for their popularity to spread across the midwest and then the west coast. One of the earliest skating rinks was built in 1863 by James Plimpton, who invented a type of roller skate that could make clean, smooth turns and encouraged customers to use them at the rink he built in his New York furniture business.

By the 1950s and ‘60s, roller skating had solidified itself into American pop culture in films like American Graffiti and other television programs such as Happy Days. In the 1970s, skating styles found their way into disco clubs, and the entertainment industry further popularized this fancy form of roller skating via artists such as Cher and Patrick Swayze.

Inline skates (otherwise known as rollerblades) made a meteoric rise in popularity during the 1990s and were among the fastest-growing sports in the U.S. Their start began in 1760s London, however, and were the invention of John Joseph Miller. However, during this time, they were relegated to mostly to use in the theatre and were poorly designed, difficult to maneuver, and carried the risk of severe injury.

Minnesotan hockey players Scott and Brennan Olson founded Rollerblade, Inc. in 1982. Their goal was to offer a product for hockey players to practice with during the year’s warmer months. This pair of entrepreneurs who helped launch the product back into the public’s eye thanks to their heavy marketing, money-back guarantees, and quality manufacturing.

The warmer months are the perfect time to get your children skating as a form of fitness training, and skating has also once again began making a comeback as a popular form of play for young kids. Today, millions of young people enjoy skating and take full advantage of the incredible health benefits, athletic training, and socializing opportunities they offer. For adults interested in getting their kids involved in sports, making new friends, and getting exercise, a pair of quality skates could be the quickest way to reach all of those goals, and give your kid unforgettable, fun memories they will treasure for a lifetime.

Nothing beats the thrill of rolling down the street in a new pair of quality roller skates. They are perfect for getting outside and enjoying the beautiful spring and summer weather and are a great form of exercise whether you enjoy skating with friends or prefer to make a solo excursion. Additionally, skates are ideal for keeping children active and healthy and help develop motor skills and coordination in younger children, especially if their skates are well made and include adjustable fasteners such as those offered by famous outdoor sports gear company Xino Sports. With quality skates under their feet and fully adjustable fasteners, your child’s skates will withstand years of regular use and can be passed down to younger siblings or donated to another eager child when the time is right.

I had a chance to see a pair of Xino Sports skates. They are well-designed and well-fitting; the adjustable mechanism is easy to use and provides room to grow so you don't have to buy multiple pairs as kids' feet grow. They come in bold, kid-friendly colors - but not so childish that your older kids won't want to wear them too. Plus, the illuminating wheels, just like light-up shoes, can be a draw for many kids.
