I recently had a chance to review Remember Me When…Creating Memories to Last a Lifetime, by Todd Williams and illustrations by Ciara Compton. This warm and beautiful book helps provide an opportunity for parents and caregivers to talk about death and grief with their children, encouraging them to remember moments with their loved ones, and how every day life events can help leave room for remembering those we loved who are no longer with us.
What I like about this book is how forward-thinking it is. It doesn't encourage kids to ignore sadness, but to embrace the memories of loved ones; to look at events like eating cookies as a way to remember baking, for example, or dressing up with friends or watching fireflies.
There's also a spot in the book that includes room to write your family's own ideas, and can be used as a way to talk about how we wish to be remembered when we're gone. This book can be an excellent tool on the family bookshelf to open a discussion about the grieving process and help kids open up about loving those who may not be alive anymore.
