I recently got a chance to see a copy of a new book designed for social emotional learning for early elementary kids - BE THE DRAGON: 9 Keys to Unlocking Your Inner Magic. The title was inspired by a young protester at the 2017 Women’s March on Washington whose sign bore the powerful message "Don't fashion me into a maiden that needs saving from a dragon. I AM THE DRAGON and I will eat you whole." The book has colorful, easy to read pages that will appeal to younger kids, coupled with a message that will make them feel grown up (in a good way) and brave.
The book was neat. Parts of it were even interesting for my girls even though they're older. It contains lessons on connecting with other people and making sense of one's own feelings. With quizzes and activities, it's much more engaging than just reading or listening to people talk about the same topics. It capitalizes on the idea of fantasy play to teach some very real lessons in an interesting, age-appropriate way.
