The key to financial freedom, even during a crisis, isn’t more government funding, posits entrepreneur, investor and former school teacher David Parker. In fact, he says, it’s imperative that government intervention in our lives be scaled back and that we take responsibility and initiative to create our own financial independence.
I had a chance to read his book Income and Wealth - David Parker Essays, Volume 1. In it, he shares his business and economic insights that he's had since his pre-teen years, and the perspectives he's gained in decades of studying economic history and principles, teaching in schools, and being a professional musician and real estate developer.
He doesn't always side with conventional wisdom, forging his own path to the accumulation of wealth. One thing I can definitely agree with - he feels that many people are living beyond their means. He also has an ambitious goal for people - investing half of their annual income. In theory, this is great - it leads to a huge income from investments. Whether it's doable for most people is another story.
It's worth a read if you want a perspective on building wealth that strays from the conventional but clearly has worked for him! Income and wealth aren't necessarily the same thing, and this book explores how he feels about both.
About Author David Parker
David Parker began his career in education at age 24 and served students of San Francisco’s inner-city public elementary schools for 40 years as a music teacher, followed by 10 years as a volunteer. While pursuing his career in education, Parker also became a very successful real estate investor. It was success in business that focused his writing, teaching and career as a professional musician. He spent 20 years as a member of the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra and 15 years as leader of the Dave Parker Sextet, which has headlined at San Francisco’s Fillmore Jazz Festival.
As Income and Wealth approached publication, Parker was already hard at work on his next book. His thoughtful essays have been featured in The Economist, The Financial Times and several prestigious law journals. In addition to being an author, entrepreneur and investor, David Parker is also a proud father and grandfather.
