I recently had a chance to review A-Okay, a graphic novel about identity and acne. It follows a young student who has to take a strong medication to fight acne. Along the way he is trying to explore where he fits into relationships with people at school.
I normally don't love the graphic novel format, but it would be great for the target audience of middle-grade readers. This book is good for kids who are reluctant readers, with parents who want to help them explore potentially challenging topics regarding budding relationships.
Jay has some pretty typical struggles - changing class schedules, new friends and changes in old relationships, acne, and more - so it's a good book for kids who might find themselves struggling with any of those issues.
