I had a chance to do an interview with Quinn Teechma, Miss Universe Canada Finalist and Miss International Tourism Canada 2020/2021, photographer and business owner on how she gained financial independence at such a young age.
"I want to be an example of how no matter where you come from you can create opportunity for yourself and live your dream life”, explained Quinn. “For me my financial freedom is also giving me incredible opportunities to help others and travel to different communities so as to affect more people globally.”
What does financial independence mean to you?To me financial independence is feeling of empowerment. It’s working hard to meet your goals (not just financial) so that you can find a sense of belonging without the stress of living beyond your means. It’s creating that reality where you can truly take any path in life. Financial independence creates opportunity for growth.
Why is it important for people to think about financial independence from a young age? I think it’s important we try to build healthy motivated mindsets in the next generation. To me it’s less about focusing them on financial independence and more about teaching them to believe in themselves. Stop comparing themselves to others and see that there’s endless possibilities in front of them. We live in a world where information is at the tip of our finger prints and we see these massive success stories all around us. My mom always taught me from a young age that I could do anything I put my mind to. She encouraged me to take risks and go after everything my wild imagination could come up with. So yes, encourage financial independence, but also cultivate the reality for young kids to really embrace their options and unique abilities.
Why is it also particularly important for women?Women, we are such complicated creatures. We are loving, empathetic, powerful, courageous. We’ve evolved and are embracing what makes us special. We bring so much good to this universe and deserve to feel good. We deserve to feel like we can do anything and create any reality we want. It’s only been more common in recent years that women are paving these pathways for each other. Women haven’t had enough role models in our society making waves and showcasing just how special is complicated creatures are. I’m working hard to bulldoze forward and be an example. I want to stand on the miss universe Canada and further the miss universe as a beacon. I want millions of women to look at the pathway I’ve created and say “If she can do it, why can’t I?” And for them to realize they can. YOU absolutely can. Whatever life you want is available if you decide to create it.
What are some tips to get young adults started on the path to financial independence?Get to know yourself. Explore your inner beliefs and fall in love with who you are. I recommend not focusing on the money but focusing on what you truly enjoy. Most people can’t answer you when you ask them anything along the lines of “what do you truly want from your life” put the hard work into not just self development, but self awareness. Who are you, what do you stand for, what do you enjoy, what do you have passion for. If you follow your passion and put the work in to truly create your reality filled with only things you love, the money will come.
