Enriching Education: National Geographic Into the Depths

National Geographic recently launched a new podcast,
Into the Depths, which highlights the journey of National Geographic Storyteller and Explorer Tara Roberts, who also happens to be the first Black woman to grace the cover of National Geographic magazine. Through the podcast, the audience listens to her journey with Diving With a Purpose, a group of Black divers who traverse the globe in search of long-lost slave shipwrecks and the truth of the history that accompanies them.

“My kids were highly interested in this content, to my surprise, “ said Anna Kay., a mom whose elementary school kids overheard the podcast as she was listening.  “They wanted to hear more, they were fascinated, and they had questions.  It definitely served as a gentle gateway for me to tell my kids about this history without it being traumatic,” she added.

Additionally, they also worked with Lab Rascals and have found children to be very curious about the content. Please see the feedback of the youth here. [Lab Rascals

With this program, you aren’t going to find traumatizing content parents are normally afraid to expose their children to as it relates to this point of our history.  Instead, they will hear stories about adventure and exploration. National Geographic even has tips on how to host a listening party.

So What is a Listening Party?

Well, a listening party is exactly how it sounds.  You simply gather a group of people, or it could just be with you and one other person, and together you listen to the podcast together - very similar to you hosting a watch party of your favorite TV show or movie.  No party size is too small and virtual events count.

To help with this, National Geographic is offering a downloadable listening party toolkit, available at natgeo.com/intothedepths. The toolkit includes:

  • A discussion guide

  • An episode guide

  • Graphics to leverage

  • A social media posting guide

  • An audio trailer to the podcast

  • Helpful information regarding how to participate in the conversation online using #intothedepths

How Do I Host a Listening Party?

It’s up to you.  There aren’t any rules on how you should go about doing this.  You can make it as simple as you’d like, such as you and a family member in your living room, or you can make it a full event production.  All you have to do is gather your guests (or a guest), get comfortable, and hit play on the podcast.  However, below are some ideas to consider below.

No matter what you decide, be sure to check out the listening party toolkit, created by National Geographic, for you to leverage.

There are no rules when doing a listening party. However, here are some tips on how to do a listening party and things to consider:

  • Do some research beforehand and have a discussion with participants.

  • Gather everyone participating and allow them to get settled.

  • Allow your guests to get settled before diving into your listening session.

  • Consider having light refreshments to share with your guests, such as bottled water, wine, bags of potato chips, cookies, nuts, granola, trail mix, a veggie platter, fruit, etc. I mean, it IS a party!

  • Consider doing relevant trivia as an icebreaker.

  • Allow time for breaks, reflections, stretching, etc.

  • Be sure to invite other family members (aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc.), even if they are only joining virtually.

  • For virtual listening parties, Spotify has the option to have a Group Session that will make it more seamless.

  • Make sure to allow for enough time to discuss after, or discuss with your guests beforehand to see if everyone is comfortable with pausing to talk.

  • Share your experience with us on your social media platforms (more details below)

Where Can I Find the Podcast?
