Fun Freetime: The Garcias

The Garcias
—a reboot of the hit Nickelodeon series The Brothers Garcia—premiered on HBO Max on Thursday, April 14.
This show aims to not only create a sense of normalcy for U.S. Latinos but also help change the narrative in our country that too often portrays them as cookie-cutter stereotypes.

In The Garcias, we jump forward 15 years from the original series. The Garcia kids are now grown up and have children of their own. The new series sees the extended Garcia family travel to the beautiful Riviera Maya in Mexico, a place full of self-discovery where they will all learn what it really takes to be a “familia.”

I had a chance to learn more in this interview.

  • Why was The Garcias created?
    • To help create a sense of normalcy for U.S. Latinos who to date have been invisible on American Television or portrayed as cookie-cutter stereotypes. Our goal is to change the narrative for our community.
  • Why is it so important for people to see the diversity within the Latino community?
    • We consider our show not to be programming but deprogramming. Which is why seeing diversity is so important, because the lack of diversity has a very negative pull on people's perception of who we really are, and we hope to change that by showing that we are just like anybody else in this country.
  • What do you hope people will take away from this show?
    • A better understanding of the common challenges we share as humans, a broader view of our challenges, an open heart to our culture, and, of course, a sense of normalcy.
