I recently had the chance to review The Silence Between Us. In the book, Deaf teen Maya has to start attending a hearing school for the first time, which requires her to adjust to the differences in culture from her previous school. She needs to explore goals for the future and relationships, all while trying to stay true to herself.
It's a book that represents a segment of the population that often isn't reflected in teen and young adult literature. Not being Deaf myself, I can't review whether or not the book does a good job representing that, but I do think it at the very least offered something to think about in terms of the differences that sometimes exist with communication - not just learning ASL vs. spoken English, but the cultural differences between the two worlds as well.
