John DiGirolamo Author Interview

John DiGirolamo shares extraordinary, personal accounts based on actual events in his eye-opening new book, It’s Not About the Sex: True Stories of Human Trafficking from a Law Enforcement Officer, a Survivor, a Brothel Madam, and an Advocate.

I had a chance to interview him to learn more.

Why did you write this book?

I believe that human trafficking is one of the most underreported issues of our day, that cuts across all economic, social, racial and political boundaries.  I focused on stories from rural and suburban America, seeking to shine a light on and create awareness of the evils of human trafficking.

Why is it important to understand more about human trafficking?

It is pervasive throughout the county.  Many people think it only occurs in big cities and on the border.  While it does happen there, it also happens in small towns and nice suburbs.  It can happen to anyone, even kids living at home and attending high school.

What can people watch out for to help protect their loved ones and prevent human trafficking?

The tactics of predators is the same whether they are after child pornography pictures or looking to traffic someone.  They are looking for vulnerable teens.  The top ten grooming signs are:

  1. New older\controlling boyfriend and need his permission
  2. New or unexplained giftssecond cellphone
  3. Sudden change in behavior, more defiant
  4. Sudden change in dress (more promiscuous, expensive)
  5. Sudden change in attitude about sex (e.g., no big deal)
  6. Secrecy about new friends or boyfriend
  7. Sudden drop in grades
  8. Starts using drugs or alcohol
  9. Missing school or quitting sports\activities
  10. Unexplained nights away from home
