Angel City Sports, host of the acclaimed annual Angel City Games, will host Courage Weekend (Nov. 19 & 20, at Cerritos College and Compton Hunting & Fishing Club), the west coast’s first adaptive sporting event in which veterans and first responders with and without disabilities can participate alongside one another. Athlete and volunteer registration is now open here.
The inaugural Courage Weekend will be a blend of low-intensity and high-intensity sports. The 3rd Annual “Evening of Courage’ Awards Dinner on November 19 will feature the presentation of The Angela Madsen Courage Award; this year’s recipient will be Brad Snyder, Navy veteran and Paralympian who has made a tremendous impact on his community. Brad has competed in three Paralympic Games in swimming and triathlon, earning six gold medals, two silver medals, and one world record.
"While we know that the Courage Weekend’s sport program will be thrilling, it’s just as important to build community and strengthen the support system for our athletes. In addition, we are honored to have over a dozen veteran service organizations joining us for the weekend.” said Clayton Frech, CEO and Founder of Angel City Sports. “This goes way beyond competition and sports. Research shows that when social support is maintained, the likelihood of veterans experiencing PTSD is 57% lower.”
The weekend is sponsored by Fox Sports and Operation Rebound and supported by a strong roster of outreach partners including the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA), Disabled American Vets (DAV), Veteran Peer Access Network (VPAN), and others. Sponsorship and outreach partnership opportunities are still available. Sponsor information can be found here.
