In the 1970s, blaxploitation erupted onto the film scene, catering to black audiences and providing subgenres of popular cinema, such as horror, action and westerns. Blaxploitation also helped with the advent of independent film, providing young, innovative actors and filmmakers with the opportunity to experiment and flourish – ushering in a time of anti-establishment filmmaking.
This month, FilmRise is celebrating blaxploitation cinema by putting a spotlight on such titles as DR. BLACK AND MR. HYDE, a riff on the DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE.
