Movie Minute: FilmRise - Blaxploitation Titles

In the 1970s, blaxploitation erupted onto the film scene, catering to black audiences and providing subgenres of popular cinema, such as horror, action and westerns. Blaxploitation also helped with the advent of independent film, providing young, innovative actors and filmmakers with the opportunity to experiment and flourish – ushering in a time of anti-establishment filmmaking.

This month, FilmRise is celebrating blaxploitation cinema by putting a spotlight on such titles as DR. BLACK AND MR. HYDE, a riff on the DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE. This seemingly silly title is helmed by many accomplished people such as BLACULA director William Crain, the acclaimed Director of Photography Tak Fujimoto (THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, BADLANDS, THE SIXTH SENSE, STAR WARS: EPISODE IV - A NEW HOPE, FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF, and many more) and future four-time Oscar-winning pioneer makeup artist Stan Winston (ALIENS, THE TERMINATOR, JURASSIC PARK, STARMAN, PREDATOR, to name a few.).

Other titles include actor William Roundtree (aka SHAFT) in the Civil War action flick CHARLEY-ONE-EYE, a rare feature length TV-pilot for the subsequent TV series GET CHRISTIE LOVE!, and many other great time capsule titles.
