Large parts of the US and Europe have experienced soaring temperatures that have surpassed long-standing records over the last few weeks. Sleeping during this extreme heat can be incredibly uncomfortable, especially during pregnancy.
That’s because when you’re expecting, the blood volume in your body is increased, resulting in a higher temperature and you feeling warmer. However, there are plenty of ways to cool yourself down and get some much-needed shut-eye.
With this in mind, the experts at Your Baby Club have recommended their top tips for keeping cool and comfortable ahead of and during your slumber.

Choose lightweight bedding
Choosing a lightweight and breathable bedding set, made from natural fiber materials like cotton or linen, can be essential to getting a good night’s sleep on a summer night. These materials allow air to circulate through the fabric and prevent the heat from becoming trapped under the covers like with more synthetic materials.
Stay hydrated
Staying well-hydrated is extremely important on a hot day for your body’s health, especially when pregnant, but did you know it can also affect how well you’ll sleep, too? Drinking plenty of water to keep you hydrated will help the body temperature to regulate and prevent overheating when you’re asleep.
A cool sleeping space
During the summer months, there are several things you can do to keep your sleeping environment cool and fresh air circulating. From electrical appliances like air conditioning and fans, to general tips like leaving the windows open but with the curtains shut and placing a bowl of ice in front of a fan to create your own air-con.
Opt for cool sleepwear
When choosing your sleepwear, it’s best to opt for loose-fitting pajamas that are made from breathable natural fibers, like cotton or linen. It’s also better to opt for shorts or a nightie than longer bottoms and choose a top that has straps instead of sleeves.
Take cool showers or baths
There is nothing worse than your body feeling hot and clammy before getting into bed. So, another great way to cool your body down before sleep is by taking a cool shower or bath. This can help to lower your body’s temperature and help you feel more comfortable and ready for a good night’s sleep.
Elevate your feet
Pregnancy can cause many people’s legs and feet to swell, and with hot weather exacerbating this further, it can be extremely uncomfortable. If the heat is causing you more discomfort with your legs and feet in your sleep, try elevating them with a pillow to help improve circulation and ease any pain you are experiencing.
Use a pregnancy pillow
Every soon-to-be mum knows that no good night’s sleep is complete without a pregnancy pillow, but when the warmer weather hits, being surrounded by a large pillow can be uncomfortable.
That’s why when choosing your pregnancy pillow, it’s best to choose a pillow that is made from breathable fabric or, alternatively, comes with a cooling cover for those warmer nights.
