Book Nook - Fortune Tellers

I recently had a chance to see a copy of Fortune Tellers by Lisa Greenwald (May 7, Katherine Tegen Books). It’s a cute story about three separated best friends who discover their paper fortune tellers are the key to staying close through middle school. As a child of the 80s, I loved that take (and I was pleased to hear from my daughter that they are still a thing - apparently some activities never disappear).

 Synopsis:

What if your fortunes really came true?

Once upon a time, Millie, Nora, and Bea were best friends who loved slumber parties, exploring their Manhattan neighborhood, and making fortune tellers with their Magic Markers. Now, in the summer before seventh grade, they haven’t spoken in over a year—thanks to a big fight, the pandemic shutting down their school, and each girl moving away for different reasons. The girls routinely check each other’s social media, but none of them can muster the courage to reach out, even if they might want to.

Then their long-ago paper fortune tellers start popping up in the most unexpected places. The fortunes carry some eerily accurate wisdom for each girl: Your future is hidden in your past. Hold on to the memories. Go back to where you started. Could this be the push the girls need to reconnect and reunite? Or is the gap between them too wide to mend?

It's not the type of story my daughter or I usually read, but it was an enjoyable read. It explores middle school social challenges and awkwardness in a way that's also universal (who hasn't had the desire to reach out to someone, but held back for some reason?). It's well-written and a fairly quick read - a great book to tuck in your bag for reading on the plane or on a road trip.

Lisa Greenwald is the author of the TBH books, the Friendship List series, the Pink & Green trilogy, and several other novels for tweens and teens. A graduate of the New School’s MFA program in writing for children, she lives in New York City with her husband, daughters, and mini Bernedoodle, Kibbitz.
